ABOUT ME
WELCOME!
My name is Pit Albert, I'm 26 years old and I'm originally from the tiny, yet charming country Luxembourg. I grew up in a small village named Stadtbredimus which is probably most well-known for its wine festival Picadilly that takes place every year on the second weekend of August! On this page I want to tell you a little bit about my filmmaking journey.
I spent the first 19 years of my life living in Luxembourg where I eventually graduated in 2017. The last year of high school surely was a challenge! Between all the study stress and playing basketball at least four times a week, I did not really have much free time on the side... which made it all the more relieving when I finally received my diploma! That's when I bought my first camera! It was a small GoPro Hero action camera and I brought it on my trips to Paris and Lisbon during that summer. I've always found that taking pictures is a great way of collecting memories, but there is just something about videos that makes you feel the emotions and the overall atmosphere of a moment way more intensely - which was my initial motivation to start making videos! I quickly learnt, however, that filming and editing videos was much harder than I initially thought and that I probably won't be as good as Sam Kolder in just a few weeks... I realised that filmmaking is a learning-by-doing process and during that time, YouTube became my best friend as there are loads of tutorials online!
In October 2017, I began studying in the beautiful town of Heidelberg in the southwest of Germany. I graduated in Biological Sciences at the end of 2020. Biology has always fascinated me. It is absolutely amazing how all the small things in our big world come together to make entire organisms and ecosystems function as a whole! During my time in Heidelberg, I spent seven months abroad in a little town called Guelph near Toronto in Canada. My exchange in Ontario was one of the biggest adventures of my life! I brought my camera along to every hockey game, every weekend trip and every university event! However, I was way to busy to actually edit any of the footage...
When Covid-19 hit in early 2020, I quickly realised that this was going to be the best opportunity to edit all of the footage that I filmed in Canada. I ended up making small videos for each of the trips I went on and then topped it off with my exchange highlight video (that nearly made my laptop explode during the export...). This was the first video I uploaded on my YouTube channel and all the positive feedback that I received motivated me to pursue filmmaking further!
After graduating in Heidelberg, I had a few months off before my Master's and I decided to buy a new camera - my amazing Panasonic Lumix GH5. After some initial struggles about manual exposure, focus peaking and color profiles, I slowly got the feeling for all the settings and taught myself to shoot awesome timelapses and hyperlapses as well. The second video I uploaded to YouTube was a tribute video to the city of Heidelberg and to this day, this is the video I've spent most time on filming and editing!
In August 2021, I left Heidelberg to continue my Master studies in Sustainable Development in Utrecht. In a world where climate change and global warming start to dominate many headlines, I saw myself contributing to a good cause. At the end of 2021, I got in touch with Erasmus Student Network (ESN) Utrecht - an international student association that organises many events, with the aim of fostering the exchange between international students and the Dutch community. I got the awesome opportunity to become part of the Promotion Committee of ESN Utrecht. I joined many trips and events and captured the best moments with my camera. Joining the Committee was great as it made me create a wide variety of videos on a regular basis, which is awesome!
I enjoyed the ESN community so much that I eventually decided to sign up for the Board for the academic year 2022-2023. The Board consists of 6 students that are working full-time to keep ESN Utrecht running and to overview everything. I had the function of the Communication Manager, which means I was taking care of all our social media channels, all online and offline promotion, ordering of goodies and promotional material and marketing. It was a crazy year filled with many awesome events, amazing trips and lots of opportunities to learn and grow as a person. I learnt how to use other Adobe apps, such as Illustrator and InDesign and still managed to make lots of videos on the side. My favorite trip was the Erasmus Generation Meeting (EGM) in Bucharest: more than 900 ESN'ers from all over Europe came together for four days filled with workshops, talks and an extensive and fun social programme. I had the opportunity to be part of the Media Team and made the official Aftermovie of the event, which was an amazing opportunity for me!
After my Board Year ended in August 2023, I continued my Master studies at Utrecht University. I completed the Science Communication Profile - a whole semester dedicated to learning how to communicate complex scientific content to various target audiences using different audiovisual communication tools. This Profile also included an internship at the Communications and Marketing Department of the Faculty of Geosciences at Utrecht University where I made a series of videos about the different laboratories of the GeoLab. The last semester of my Master studies was dedicated to my thesis where I researched how light is intercepted by rainforest canopies. During that time, I decided to found my own video production company Pit Albert Media Productions, and I continued making videos for diverse clients, including Utrecht University. In August 2024, I finally graduated!
So what is next? I'm currently traveling the East Coast of Australia for two months and I'm having the best time! I'll return in the beginning of December and I'm honestly super motivated to continue working on upcoming video projects! At the same time, I'm actively looking for jobs in science communication, preferably including elements of graphic design, videography and photography.Â
(A new and updated version of my website is also currently under construction - exciting!)
Anyways, this was my filmmaking journey, I'm excited where it will take me!
Cheers,
Pit
